Somalia’s Candidacy for AU Peace and Security Council 2025-2028

Building on lessons learned and fostering inclusive dialogue to shape the peaceful and prosperous Africa we aspire to achieve.

Our History:
Somalia has long been a steadfast champion of Pan-African unity. From supporting liberation movements in the Horn of Africa to providing military training for independence struggles in South Africa, we have upheld the ideals of Pan-Africanism and continental solidarity. Somalia’s contributions have extended beyond the region, reinforcing financial sanctions against apartheid regimes and standing as a cornerstone of liberation movements across Africa.

Our Engagement with APSA:
Over the past decade, Somalia has demonstrated its pivotal role in advancing the African Union’s principles of “African Solutions to African Problems.” Through peacebuilding, reform, and effective crisis management, Somalia has emerged as a fully functioning and stable state, achieving debt relief, joining the East African Community, and fostering regional partnerships.

Our Case:
Somalia is seeking membership on the AU Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) for the 2025-2028 term. Despite being an active participant in regional peace and security efforts, Somalia has yet to serve on the PSC since its establishment in 2004. This candidacy represents a rightful step forward based on the principle of fairness and rotation.

Additionally, Somalia’s membership on the UN Security Council (2025-2026) provides a unique opportunity for synergy between the two councils, enabling a stronger, unified African voice in addressing global and regional challenges.

Our Vision and Commitment:
Somalia is committed to strengthening AU peacekeeping by drawing on lessons learned and prioritizing proactive measures to address the root causes of conflicts. Our vision is to foster trust, unity, and progress across the continent, building a peaceful and prosperous Africa for future generations.

Somalia reaffirms its unwavering dedication to Africa’s peace and prosperity. Together, we can advance shared goals and build a continent defined by stability, cooperation, and success.
