Somalia Marks Africa Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Continental Unity and Justice

Mogadishu (MFA Somalia)- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hosted a ceremony in Mogadishu today to commemorate Africa Day, marking the anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963. The OAU later transitioned into the African Union (AU) in 2002.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, described May 25 as a significant day for Africa. He emphasized that the African agenda remains a top priority in Somalia’s foreign policy.The Minister expressed hope for a prosperous continent and a thriving Somalia, while highlighting the importance of justice for Africa, both in addressing the legacy of colonialism and in promoting fairness among its people.
The event, sponsored by IBS Bank, brought together several Somali federal government ministers and ambassadors from African countries accredited to Somalia.

Somalia was a founding member of the OAU and signed its founding charter in 1963. The country supported liberation movements in southern, central, and eastern Africa and contributed to efforts aimed at resolving regional tensions and conflicts. In 1974, Somalia hosted the 11th OAU Summit in Mogadishu.
