Somalia’s Chairmanship
In a momentous decision at the 24th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State in Arusha, Tanzania, Somalia was appointed as the Rapporteur of the EAC for the year 2025, marking a pivotal milestone for the Federal Republic of Somalia, the newest member of the EAC, and positioning the country to play a vital role in advancing deeper cooperation and collective progress within the regional bloc.
The Federal Republic of Somalia remains fully committed to the realization of the EAC Vision 2050, an ambitious framework aimed at steering the region toward enhanced peace, security, and shared prosperity, and as the Rapporteur for 2025, its leadership will be crucial in advancing the bloc’s development agenda, particularly in key areas such as trade, cultural exchange, social integration, and regional infrastructure, while also fostering stronger regional ties and ensuring mutual growth and prosperity for all member states within the EAC.
With a dynamic and entrepreneurial population, Somalia presents substantial opportunities for regional economic growth, and its strategic location, boasting the longest coastline in Africa at approximately 3,333 kilometers, spans the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Guardafui Channel to the northeast, and the Indian Ocean to the east, offering immense potential in sectors such as agriculture, energy, fisheries, and infrastructure development, while also positioning the country as a key player in regional trade and investment.
The appointment of Somalia as Rapporteur reflects the country’s firm commitment to contributing meaningfully to the EAC’s vision of fostering greater economic cooperation and regional unity while Somalia is dedicated to strengthening partnerships within the bloc and ensuring the continued prosperity of the East African region in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
