Honorable Ali Mohamed Omar currently serves as the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia. He is in his second term as a member of the Somali Parliament. He previously held the significant position of Chief of Staff during Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s first term from 2014 to 2017. Mr. Omar has a rich background in the technology sector, amassing over thirty years of experience. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Somali National University in 1984.

He furthered his education with an MBA from California State University, Fresno, through the Somali Institute for Development Administration and Management (SIDAM) in 1988. He also obtained a post-baccalaureate certificate in Computer Programming from North Carolina State University in 1998. Before the civil war in Somalia, Mr. Omar worked at Somalitax, a leading Somali textile manufacturer, eventually becoming the Assistant to the General Manager. His career also includes consultancy for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Somalia and teaching at SIDAM. From 1992 to 1995, he was an Accounting Manager for IKEA in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

After moving to the United States in mid-1995, he worked as a Senior Software Engineer at International Business Machines (IBM) Research Triangle Park, NC, for twenty years before transitioning into politics. Mr. Omar is committed to working with the Somali government and international partners to promote equitable access to high-quality economic and social opportunities in Somalia.
