Brussels (MFA Somalia) – The State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Ali Mohamed Omar, participated on Wednesday in the 3rd European Union–African Union (EU-AU) Ministerial Meeting held in Brussels.
Foreign Ministers from member states of the European Union and the African Union gathered to review the progress made under the Joint Vision for 2030, adopted during the 6th EU-AU Summit in 2022. The meeting also laid the groundwork for the 7th EU-AU Summit, which will be hosted in Africa in 2025 to mark the 25th anniversary of the partnership.
The ministerial discussions focused on revitalizing cooperation between the two continents in line with Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the European Union’s priorities. Emphasis was placed on enhancing the EU-AU partnership in peace and security, particularly as both unions account for 40 percent of the votes in the United Nations and as 70 percent of Security Council matters relate to Africa.
The meeting also highlighted the need to shift from high-level commitments to implementation, particularly in the context of Africa’s recent inclusion in the G20 and ongoing changes in the multilateral global order. The AU-EU partnership, grounded in Agenda 2063 and the 2022 summit, centers around four key pillars: fostering a prosperous and sustainable Africa-Europe agenda, strengthening cooperation in peace, security and governance, promoting balanced migration and mobility, and reinforcing a shared commitment to multilateralism.
In advance of the ministerial session, senior officials from both sides convened in Brussels on 20 May to review preparatory documents, including the draft programme and the draft joint statement.
