Ambasador Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, presided over the third meeting of the Ministerial Group today in Cairo. The primary focus of the meeting was to reinforce collective efforts in supporting the Federal Republic of Somalia against violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Mauritania, Egypt, and Djibouti. His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, was also in attendance. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Arab League Council’s ministerial session at its headquarters in Cairo.
The discussions followed Arab League Council Resolution No. 8988, dated 17 January 2024, and built upon the outcomes of the second Ministerial Group meeting held during the Arab Summit in Bahrain. During the session, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi provided a detailed briefing on the latest developments, particularly concerning Ethiopia Annexation MOU signed on 1 January 2024 which the Federal Republic of Somalia has deemed null, void, and unacceptable.
The Ministerial Group reaffirmed the necessity of full Arab solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia in defending against any infringement on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The group further underscored that the Somaliland region remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, in accordance with the Arab League Charter and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
The ministers collectively rejected the validity of the aforementioned Memorandum of Understanding and reiterated their unwavering support for Somalia’s legitimate claims, alongside ongoing efforts aimed at national reconciliation and the preservation of Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity.
