EAC-SADC Ministerial Meeting Reviews Progress on DRC Security Efforts

Harare (MFA Somalia) – The East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened a joint ministerial meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Monday, March 17, to discuss the security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Somalia participated in the meeting as rapporteur for the EAC, represented by its Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania and the representative to EAC, H.E. Amb. Ilyas Ali Hassan.
Somalia reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to regional peace and stability, emphasizing the value of collective action and constructive dialogue in addressing security concerns, while underscoring diplomacy as the most effective pathway to lasting solutions.
The ministerial session reviewed progress on implementing decisions from the Joint Summit of Heads of State and Government, held on February 8, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Key discussions covered the report of the Joint Meeting of Chiefs of Defence Staff, the establishment of a technical coordination mechanism, financing modalities for implementation measures, and unresolved issues concerning sustainable peace and security in eastern DRC.
The meeting’s recommendations will be submitted to the upcoming joint summit between the EAC and SADC.
