Federal Government of Somalia, EU, and IOM Deliver on Their Commitment to Dignified Returns

The Federal Government of Somalia continues to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the safety and dignity of its citizens abroad. In a significant milestone, 147 Somali migrants stranded in Libya have returned home under the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) initiative.
The chartered flight, organized in collaboration with the European Union and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), first landed in Hargeisa, where 31 migrants disembarked. It later proceeded to Mogadishu, carrying the remaining 116 returnees, who were warmly welcomed by senior officials.
Among those present to receive the returnees were Ambassador Yunis Hashi, Director of Europe and Americas, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Somalia’s Ambassador to Libya Abdi Adan; Dr. Ali Haji Aden – Somalia’s Minister of Health; Mariam Yassin, Special Presidential Envoy for Immigration and Refugees; Karin Johansson – European Union Ambassador to Somalia; and Prestage Murima – IOM Deputy Chief of Mission in the Horn of Africa.
This repatriation effort highlights the Federal Government’s strategic approach to addressing the challenges faced by Somali migrants. With steadfast support from the European Union and IOM, the government has ensured the safe and dignified return of its citizens while providing them with essential resources to rebuild their lives. These efforts reflect Somalia’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its nationals and addressing migration issues through strong international partnerships.
The return marks the third VHR flight in just two months, bringing the total number of Somali migrants safely repatriated from Libya to 844 under the Migrant Protection, Return, and Reintegration Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa (MPRR-SSA). Funded by the European Union and implemented by IOM, the program provides returnees with immediate cash grants, medical care, mental health and psychosocial support, onward transportation, and reintegration assistance to support their successful reentry into society.
The collaborative effort between the Federal Government of Somalia, the European Union, and IOM underscores a shared dedication to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of Somali migrants. The government remains steadfast in its mission to protect its citizens, particularly its youth, while addressing migration challenges with compassion and resolve. This initiative serves as a testament to the strength of Somalia’s partnerships with international allies, fostering hope and opportunity for its people.
