Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and State Minister Ali Omar Meet with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support

FM Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, together with His Excellency State Minister Honorable Ali Omar, held a pivotal meeting with Mr. Atul Khare, UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, at the minister’s office.

The discussion, later continuing at the office of State Minister Ali Omar, focused on bolstering Somalia’s security and advancing its strategic partnership with the United Nations.

Key discussion topics included Somalia’s recent security victories, particularly the successful operations against Al-Shabaab, which were made possible by the crucial support from the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). The UNSOS team has provided logistical, medical, and operational assistance, ensuring the Somali National Army’s success in the ongoing security efforts. As UNSOS’s mandate draws to a close, both parties focused on smoothly transitioning security responsibilities to Somali national forces, ensuring continuity and stability in the country’s defence strategy.

The talks also highlighted the need for further capacity building in critical areas such as aviation, transport, and communication to ensure the long-term sustainability of Somali forces. A comprehensive review of the Status of Mission Agreement (SOMA) was conducted to improve the operational frameworks supporting contractors involved in Somalia’s security efforts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation remains steadfast in its commitment to working with the United Nations and international allies to foster peace, stability, and sustainable development for Somalia.
