The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, participated in the second session of the Joint Trilateral Ministerial Committee alongside his counterparts from Egypt and Eritrea. The meeting, held in Cairo at the invitation of Egypt’s Foreign Minister, His Excellency Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, focused on strengthening cooperation, implementing agreements from the Asmara Summit of October 10, 2024, and exploring new areas for collaboration to benefit the peoples of the three nations.
Discussions highlighted the importance of strategic partnership to enhance security and stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. Key topics included Somalia’s cooperation with Egypt in peacebuilding efforts, Egypt’s contributions to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), and the regional impact of the crisis in Sudan. Somalia and Eritrea also expressed full support for Egypt’s candidate for UNESCO Director-General, Dr. Khaled El-Anani, demonstrating unity in regional and international affairs.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and a commitment to non-interference in its internal affairs. It was also agreed that the next session of the Joint Ministerial Committee will be held in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital.
