Minister of Foreign Affairs Concludes High-Level Meeting on UNTMIS Transition Roadmap in Somalia

Mogadishu (MFA Somalia) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, successfully concluded today a high-level working group meeting that brought together approximately sixty officials and experts from Federal Government institutions, UNTMIS and various United Nations agencies operating in Somalia.


The meeting, jointly convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Transition Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), was focused on negotiation on developing a comprehensive roadmap for the phased transfer of responsibilities from UNTMIS mission to the Federal Government of Somalia and relevant UN agencies during the initial phase of the transition.


Minister Fiqi expressed deep appreciation for the crucial role played by the UN mission in supporting Somalia’s state-building and stabilization efforts. He highlighted the significant progress the country has made across various sectors and emphasized the evolving nature of Somalia’s national priorities.

In his closing remarks the Minister further urged stakeholders to ensure that the transition process remains pragmatic, well-structured, and efficiently executed and upon the completion of the two-year transition period, all UN agencies operating in Somalia, in cooperation and coordination with government institutions, will align their programs and initiatives with the National Transformation Plan (NTP), ensuring a cohesive and strategic approach to Somalia’s development agenda.


The event was attended by Ambassador James Swan, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, alongside senior government and UN officials. Both Minister Fiqi and Ambassador Swan commended the dedication and professionalism of the officials and experts involved in formulating the transition plan, which is scheduled to be presented to the United Nations Security Council in March 2025.
