Doha (MFA Somalia) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, addressed on Monday the ministerial meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Somalia, which convened in Doha from July 27–28. The meeting, hosted by the brotherly State of Qatar, was opened by H.E. Sultan bin Saad bin Sultan Al Muraikhi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar.
Established in 2007, the OIC Contact Group on Somalia serves as a platform to mobilize coordinated support for peace, development, and humanitarian response in Somalia. This year’s session focused on strengthening partnerships and reviewing progress in key areas including security, economic reform, and inclusive governance.
In his address, the Minister highlighted recent achievements under the Somali Security Development Plan, including the transition of 23 military bases from international to national control and the generation of 20,000 new troops. He appealed for enhanced support in critical areas such as logistics, surveillance, and counter-IED systems.
The Minister also emphasized the country’s economic turnaround following debt relief through the HIPC Initiative, and called for investments aligned with the National Transformation Plan (2025–2035) and Vision 2060. He noted rising foreign direct investment and outlined opportunities in infrastructure and energy.
On political reforms, the Minister cited progress in federalism, constitution finalization, and preparations for universal suffrage in 2026. He welcomed support for the education and healthcare sectors and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive development, particularly youth and women’s empowerment.
The government welcomed the recent adoption of the statutes of the OIC humanitarian funds, including the Special OIC Fund for the Development of Somalia, and urged its swift operationalization. The Minister proposed establishing a Follow-Up Committee within the Contact Group to track progress and improve cooperation.
He concluded by thanking Qatar and OIC member states for their continued solidarity, stressing the country’s commitment to becoming a stable, self-reliant, and peaceful nation.
