Jeddah (MFA Somalia) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, held a constructive bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs of the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, on Friday, on the sidelines of the extraordinary session of the OIC Foreign Ministers in Jeddah to support the Palestinian people and reject calls for forced displacement
Minister Ahmed Fiqi emphasized Somalia’s commitment to strengthening its relations with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, underscoring the importance of advancing cooperation in security, defense, stability, economy, trade, and regional matters of shared interest.
Dr. Badr Abdelatty praised the deep historical ties between Egypt and Somalia, reiterating Egypt’s unwavering support for Somalia’s stability and security. He highlighted Egypt’s dedication to expanding bilateral relations and its efforts to build upon the outcomes of the tripartite summit held in Asmara on October 10, 2024, between Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea.
Both ministers expressed their satisfaction with the elevation of Somali-Egyptian relations to a strategic partnership, a decision made during President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Cairo on January 24, 2025. This new partnership is aimed at strengthening cooperation, promoting mutual interests, and contributing to regional stability and development.
The ministers also addressed regional security challenges, stressing the importance of enhanced coordination. They reviewed progress on the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which aligns with Somalia’s vision for lasting security and stability.
The situation in Gaza was also discussed, with Dr. Badr Abdelatty outlining Egypt’s efforts to solidify the ceasefire and ensure its phased implementation. The two ministers explored ways to garner Arab and Islamic support for the reconstruction of Gaza through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, seeking international support for the Palestinian cause in line with the resolutions of the Cairo Summit.
