Somali Foreign Minister Addresses UN Security Council on Palestinian Issue

New York (MFA Somalia) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Amb. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, delivered a powerful speech at the United Nations Security Council during its 9841st meeting, focusing on the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirming his country’s commitment to the Palestinian cause.

Minister Fiqi Ahmed began his remarks by expressing gratitude to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria for convening the important session, which highlighted the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. He also acknowledged the Secretary-General’s briefing, which painted a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis in the region.

In his speech today, Minister Ahmed Fiqi welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, emphasizing that this was only a first step toward achieving lasting peace. He called for addressing the root causes of the conflict, including ending the Israeli occupation and lifting the blockade on Gaza.

The Minister also stressed the need for comprehensive reconstruction efforts in Gaza, which must go beyond physical rebuilding to include investment in the people, support for local communities, and economic development to ensure a more stable and just future.

The Somali Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s strong backing for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which provides critical humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees. He urged the international community to ensure that UNRWA’s work continues without obstruction and called for unity to prevent any unilateral actions that could worsen the region’s crisis.

In conclusion, the Minister reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to the Palestinian cause by calling for a just and comprehensive solution to the conflict based on international legitimacy as he emphasized the importance of the Arab Peace Initiative, which envisions the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, urging the international community to intensify efforts to end the Israeli occupation and achieve sustainable peace in the region.

This statement was delivered as Somalia began its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council where it will contribute to global efforts in addressing peace and security challenges.
