Baghdad (MFA Somalia) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a keynote address on Saturday at the opening of the 34th Arab League Summit and the 5th Development Summit, held in Baghdad, the capital city of Iraq.
In his speech, the President highlighted Somalia’s national progress, emphasizing the government’s efforts in rebuilding institutions, enhancing security, countering terrorism, and advancing economic development. He noted that these efforts have contributed to the broader goals of state-building and national unity.
President Mohamud reaffirmed Somalia’s principled stance on key regional matters, including unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. He condemned the ongoing invasion and atrocities in the Gaza Strip, declaring, “The Palestinian cause is a test for us Arabs; as Somalis, we believe in the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
The President also welcomed the lifting of sanctions on Syria, describing it as a positive step toward the country’s recovery.
He further reiterated Somalia’s support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Sudan, calling on all parties to safeguard the unity of the Sudanese people and the stability of the country.
