Somalia and Algeria Sign Three Key Agreements to Boost Bilateral Cooperation

Algiers, (MFA Somalia) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Mr. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, met on Sunday in Algiers with his counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Attaf, and discussed with him ways to strengthen bilateral relations, deepen cooperation in various sectors, and consolidate strategic partnerships between the two brotherly countries.

The discussions centered on enhancing bilateral and multilateral ties, coordinating at the United Nations, and advancing shared regional objectives, especially support for the Palestinian cause and promoting peace and development throughout Africa.

During the meeting, the two ministers signed three legal agreements aimed at expanding institutional cooperation, including the establishment of a joint governmental committee, a political consultation mechanism, and enhanced cooperation in diplomatic training.

Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali underscored the historical ties between Somalia and Algeria rooted in their shared experiences of decolonization and independence, expressing optimism that the agreements will open new avenues for collaboration in security, education, trade, and capacity building

On his side, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf praised Somalia’s progress in rebuilding state institutions, restoring security, and regaining its international standing, reaffirming Algeria’s steadfast support based on the belief that Somalia’s stability is crucial to the Horn of Africa and the continent at large.

Attaf also highlighted Algeria’s dual role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council since January 2024 and Chair of the African Peace and Security Council, roles through which Algeria seeks to advocate for Somalia’s security and development.

The two ministers emphasized their commitment to strengthening political, economic, and diplomatic cooperation while coordinating positions on Arab and African priorities.

The Ministers also identified shared priorities focused on promoting peace and stability, combating terrorism and cross-border crime, and safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both nations. To achieve these goals, they pledged to collaborate closely within the frameworks of the African Union and the A3+ group, advancing Africa’s political, security, and economic development.

The talks mark a significant step toward reinforcing long-standing bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation on regional and international matters of mutual interest.
