A high-level meeting took place at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs between a Somali delegation, led by His Excellency Mr. Ali Mohamed Omar, State Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and His Excellency Mr. Thani Mohamed-Soilihi, French State Minister for Francophonie and International Partnerships. The Somali delegation also included His Excellency Mr. Abdihakim Mohamed Yusuf, Chief of Staff to Somalia’s Presidency; His Excellency Ambassador Yonis Yassin Hashi, Director of Europe and Americas Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur, Somali Ambassador to France. The French delegation, led by their State Minister, comprised senior directors from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as security, migration, and economic development.
The discussions highlighted Somalia’s growing role on the international stage, including its recent election to the United Nations Security Council. France congratulated Somalia on this achievement and pledged close collaboration during its tenure. Both sides emphasized Somalia’s sovereignty and stability, with France reaffirming its support for counterterrorism efforts, maritime security, and the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Economic cooperation was a key focus, with discussions on revitalizing French investments in Somalia’s infrastructure, fisheries, and hydrocarbon sectors. France’s interest in reopening its embassy in Mogadishu was warmly welcomed as a step toward strengthening diplomatic ties. On migration, both sides addressed the need to combat human trafficking and prevent tragedies, such as the recent loss of Somali lives near Madagascar, through improved management and humanitarian support.
Somalia and France reaffirmed their shared commitment to long-term development and mutual progress. The meeting underscored France’s readiness to support Somalia’s regional stability, economic growth, and global engagement, paving the way for a stronger and more strategic partnership.
