Tripoli (MFA Somalia) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met on Monday in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, with the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity of the brotherly State of Libya, H.E. Mr. Abdulhamid Mohammed Al-Dabaiba, as part of his official visit, and discussed with him ways to advance bilateral relations and cultivate joint cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Somalia and Libya signed four memoranda of understanding to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including mutual exemption from visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports, the establishment of a joint ministerial committee, a political understanding between the two foreign ministries, and a memorandum of cooperation between the municipalities of Mogadishu and Tripoli.
During the meeting, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, signed several agreements with H.E. Mr. Taher Salem Al-Baour, Minister in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the State of Libya, including the mutual exemption from entry visas for holders of diplomatic passports, as well as a memorandum of understanding to establish a framework for political consultations between the two ministries, aimed at enhancing diplomatic coordination and aligning positions on issues of common interest.
A memorandum of cooperation was also signed between the Mogadishu Municipality and the Tripoli Municipality, aimed at deepening cooperation in local administration and urban development.
The two parties also reached an understanding to establish a high-level joint committee responsible for reviewing previous agreements, exploring investment opportunities, and strengthening economic and development cooperation between the two countries.
During the discussions, the two sides emphasized the importance of cooperation on regional issues, particularly in the Horn of Africa, highlighting Somalia’s election to the UN Security Council as a pivotal opportunity to strengthen regional security, stability, and cooperation among the countries of the region.
