Somalia Brings Home Nine Nationals from Algeria to Deter Irregular Migration

Mogadishu (MFA Somalia) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has successfully facilitated the evacuation of nine Somali citizens from Algeria, as part of ongoing efforts to prevent irregular migration and protect lives from the dangers of sea crossings.
The group, which included four young women, arrived safely at Aden Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu, where they were received by Dr. Mohamed Hussein Gaas, Director of the Department of Diaspora Affairs at the Ministry.

Speaking at the airport, Dr. Gaas expressed his gratitude to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for their valued partnership and reaffirmed the Federal Government of Somalia’s strong commitment to protecting its citizens—particularly youth—from the risks associated with unsafe migration routes. He also acknowledged the crucial role played by the Somali Embassy in Algiers, whose effective coordination and diplomatic efforts were key to ensuring the group’s safe return.
This operation follows the Ministry’s successful evacuation of three Somali fishermen from the Maldives on June 12, after they had been lost at sea since December 2024.
The Ministry acknowledges and commends the instrumental role of H.E. Yusuf Axmed Xasan (Yusuf Jeego) the Somali Ambassador to Algeria, the Somali Embassy in Algiers, and the Department of Arab Affairs at the Ministry for their dedicated efforts in coordinating this repatriation. Their unwavering commitment and effective collaboration were central to the successful completion of this humanitarian mission, which reflects the Ministry’s broader mandate to safeguard Somali citizens abroad and combat the risks of irregular migration.
