Somalia Concludes Two-Year Tenure at the Helm of AU Ministerial Committee on Candidatures

Addis Ababa (MFA Somalia) – The African Union’s Ministerial Committee on Candidatures convened for its biannual meeting to deliberate on and advocate for African candidates seeking key positions in international organizations. As a strategic body, the committee plays a crucial role in ensuring that Africa’s voice is effectively represented in global decision-making forums.

During the session, members assessed candidatures for influential roles, including positions within the United Nations Security Council, UNESCO, and other major international bodies. The meeting also reviewed the implementation of past resolutions and evaluated progress on previously endorsed candidates. Furthermore, discussions highlighted ongoing consultations, particularly in regions where multiple African candidates were competing for the same positions, emphasizing the need for consensus and regional coordination.

Notably, Somalia had chaired this subcommittee for the past two years, demonstrating its leadership in continental diplomatic affairs. Today’s session marked the conclusion of Somalia’s tenure at the helm of the committee, underscoring its commitment to strengthening Africa’s collective influence on the global stage.
