Somalia Takes Its Seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council

Addis Ababa (MFA Somalia) – H.E. Hamza Adan Haadow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has marked Somalia’s official assumption of its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council, following its election in February 2026 for a two-year term. This milestone reflects the confidence of African Union member states in Somalia’s growing role in advancing peace and security across the continent.

As part of the formal commencement of its tenure, H.E. Amb. Abdullahi Warfaa, Somalia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, raised the Somali flag at the Council’s headquarters in Addis Ababa. Somalia’s membership comes amid sustained diplomatic momentum, including its tenure on the United Nations Security Council, accession to the East African Community, and entry into the African Peer Review Mechanism.

During its term, Somalia will actively contribute to advancing African-led solutions to peace and security challenges, with a focus on conflict prevention, counterterrorism, maritime security, and strengthened regional cooperation, particularly in the Horn of Africa, reinforcing its role as a credible and constructive partner on the continent.
