Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Facilitates the Successful Return of 161 Somali Youth from Libya

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, under the leadership of Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, has successfully facilitated the voluntary repatriation of 161 Somali youth stranded in Libya through the Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) program. This significant operation saw 74 individuals returning to Hargeisa and 87 to Mogadishu, underscoring Somalia’s commitment to addressing migration challenges and reintegrating its citizens.

Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi emphasized the Federal Government of Somalia’s unwavering dedication to protecting its nationals abroad and ensuring their safe return. He commended the collaborative efforts that contributed to the mission’s success. Ambassador Mariam Yassin, Somalia’s Special Presidential Envoy for Migrants, Returnees & Children’s Rights, expressed her gratitude for the coordinated efforts, highlighting the pivotal role of the Somali Embassy in Libya in overcoming logistical challenges.

The repatriation was made possible with the critical support of the European Union, IOM, and UNHCR, whose contributions were essential in facilitating the safe and dignified return of these individuals. EU Ambassador to Somalia Karin Johansson and IOM Somalia’s Country Director Manuel Marques Pereira praised Somalia’s proactive measures in addressing the plight of stranded nationals. Their presence, along with key international partners, underscores the importance of global collaboration in addressing migration challenges.

His Excellency Ambassador Abdi Adan, Somalia’s Ambassador to Libya, played an instrumental role in coordinating on-ground efforts, ensuring the success of this complex operation.

This initiative highlights the strength of Somalia’s partnerships with international stakeholders and reflects the government’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding its citizens and fostering their reintegration into society.
